Original artwork by Smoking goats on reclaimed wood.
Smoking goats is an Auckland-based artist whose work merges history, culture, and religion with the absurd to create something new. Influenced by global philosophies and classical etchers such as Doré and Piranesi, he combines precision and spontaneity in his detailed linework.
Created on a piece of salvaged wood, this work layers acrylic paint with finely drawn pen linework. A historical figure emerges from the surface, rendered with careful detail and classical references, while the worn texture of the wood introduces imperfection, age, and quiet disruption.
The contrast between the disciplined drawing and the rough, weathered material creates tension between past and present, reverence and irreverence. Rather than presenting a clear statement, the piece invites reflection on how history, symbolism, and authority can be re-framed through unexpected materials and subtle absurdity.
